Watchman on the Wall
A Biblical Mandate for Men
The Role of the Watchman: A Call to Responsibility
As a watchman, a man is called to be spiritually alert, guarding his household against the encroachments of sin and the dangers that threaten the spiritual well-being of his family.
This role is not passive but requires active engagement-listening to God’s word, discerning His will, and leading his family accordingly. The watchman is responsible for warning, guiding, and nurturing those under his care, ensuring they walk in the ways of righteousness.
The Husband: Protector and Provider
In the role of a husband, a man is to reflect the love of Christ for His Church, as outlined in Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
This sacrificial love is not only protective but also nurturing, ensuring that the wife feels secure, cherished, and supported. A husband is to be the primary source of spiritual, emotional, and physical provision, leading his wife with wisdom and grace.
The Father: Shepherd of His Children
As a father, the call to be a watchman extends to the upbringing of children. Proverbs 22:6 teaches, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
A father is to shepherd his children, teaching them the ways of the Lord, correcting them in love, and setting a godly example. In Deuteronomy 6:6-7, men are instructed to impress God’s commandments on their children, discussing them at all times-when at home, on the road, lying down, and rising up.
This holistic approach to parenting ensures that children grow up with a strong spiritual foundation.
The Priest: Spiritual Leader of the Home
Every man is called to be the priest of his household, leading his family In worship and prayer. In 1 Peter 2:9, believers are described as a “royal priesthood,” with the responsibility to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
As the priest of his home, a man is to lead his family in prayer, ensure that the home is a place where God’s presence is honored, and make intercession for his family.
This role includes guiding family members in their spiritual growth and ensuring that the home remains a place of peace, worship, and godliness.
The King: leader and Decision-Maker
In his role as king, a man is entrusted with the leadership and governance of his household.
This role involves making decisions that align with God’s will and benefit the family as a whole.
The wisdom of Solomon, who sought God’s guidance to lead Israel, serves as a model. In 1 Kings 3:9, Solomon asks, “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.” ‘A man, as kin of his household, must also seek God’s wisdom to lead his family justly and righteously.
The Prophet: Voice of Truth
As a prophet in his household, a man ls called to be the voice of truth, proclaiming God’s word to his family.
This role requires a deep connection with God, enabling him to speak into the lives of his family members with authority and love.
Like the prophets of old, who declared God’s will to the people, men are to stand firm in their convictions, guiding their families in truth and righteousness.
Conclusion: Embracing the Fullness of the Call
Being a husband, father, and leader is a profound responsibility that requires embracing the roles of watchman, priest, king, and prophet.
By fulfilling these roles, men can lead their households in a manner that honours God, ensuring that their families are spiritually fortified and aligned with God’s purposes.
As watchmen, men must remain vigilant constantly seeking God’s guidance and striving to reflect Christ in every aspect of their lives.
In doing so, they fulfil their God-given mandate and leave a legacy of faith for future generations.
